How to plan a Primary School Numeracy Strategy – understanding how numeracy is an integral part of learning across the curriculum

This event will run:-

as morning sessions from 10.00 until 12.30 over two weeks

or as twilight sessions from 16.00 to 18.30 over two weeks

How will this course benefit you?

Mathematics and numeracy shape our world in all sorts of ways. Understanding science, geography and design technology require an essential element of mathematics and basic numeracy. There are many other subjects and in extra-curricular activities where number is evident and necessary. Where teachers and pupils use their growing understanding of the concepts they teach and learn in maths lessons in the context of deepening understanding and acquiring knowledge in other subject there is a significant impact on learning outcomes and on the ability of pupils to make connections and retain their learning over time.

What will be covered in the course?

  • A review of the Maths Programme of Study and its purpose and aims to ensure pupils become fluent in the fundamentals, reason mathematically and solve problems in different situations that require different solution
  • An opportunity to focus on where maths is integral to learning in other subjects across the curriculum and how to build a consensus and work collaboratively to ensure that pupils make connections across all their learning
  • A focus on planning the maths curriculum from early years to year 6 and beyond, an in-depth look at how long and medium-term plans should focus on starting with clearly defined end points and build on prior learning. We look at how to create sequential learning that builds knowledge and deeper understanding
  • Defining assessment strategies that are consistent and robust and are evidence that pupils know how well they are progressing, teachers know and where pupils have gaps in their learning
  • Time to share ideas and best practice examples of pedagogy that ensure pupils grasp concepts and are challenged through the use of rich and sophisticated problem solving

Who is this course for?

For senior Leaders - A very intensive focus for senior leaders who have overall control of curriculum planning and want to be aware of the latest research and 'deep dive' strategies that can help to ensure that all pupils have the numeracy skills to access knowledge, deepen their conceptual understanding, sequence the learning and become unconsciously competent in their use of numeracy skills they need for learning.

For Numeracy Leaders - This course is invaluable for those with responsibility for numeracy across the curriculum. We look in detail at the core components of the maths curriculum and how through careful long-and medium-term planning pupils develop numeracy skills that will enhance their learning in all subjects and across the curriculum.

For teachers - For all teachers in the primary phase this course challenges them to look in detail at the aims and statutory guidance that make up a sequential and knowledge rich maths curriculum. We look at how through positive interaction and professional learning conversations the use of number, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion and algebra are part of a deep repertoire of sequential learning in maths and across the curriculum.
