Teaching with Zoom - Developing 21st century teaching and learning skills using a powerful online video- conferencing platform

Developing 21st century teaching and learning skills using a powerful online video- conferencing platform

This course is designed to help educators teach using the Zoom platform. Within this course there are opportunities to learn some of the technical elements but these form only one part of the pedagogical formula that is essential for 21st century blended learning.

The art of teaching remains intact but in a new format; a little like a sculptor turning to painting. We show you how to discover new skills and use your own expertise to shape learning and unlock potential in a world turned upside down.

Although we use Zoom as the medium for the learning, many of the principles apply whichever video system is being used. It is the pedagogy that we focus on. We want to create for the participant opportunities to reflect on how they communicate to make sure that learning is taking place. It is the outcomes and the impact that this approach has on how the learner develops and progresses towards achieving a set of clearly defined objectives and end points that is critical.

We want all those who take part in this course to reflect on the pedagogies and teaching strategies that work both in the classroom and remotely and that will ultimately enhance their own professional development and create positive learning experiences for the learner.

This course is broken down into five sections

1.Technical know-how - A deep dive into using an online platform for learning

2.Planning successful outcomes for the teacher and the learner

3.What is active learning and how can we foster a learning culture using online platforms?

4.Group/small team learning - A specific focus on how to develop interactive learning strategies

5.Feedback and Breakout Dynamics - Creating the right conditions for interaction, reflection and positive feedback

This event will run:-

as morning sessions from 10.00 until 12.30 over two weeks

or as twilight sessions from 16.00 to 18.30 over two weeks

The intervening week can be used for reflection, collaboration and an opportunity to share with colleagues the learning from the first session to review some of the valuable resources and materials that will help to shape future planning.

Who is the course for?

Primarily, this course is for anyone who is teaching using video-conferencing platforms either to facilitate learning for learners who are not able to be in class or where the curriculum is planned to include a remote component as part of planning for the future.  The opportunities to build a set of pedagogical skills for a future where blended learning is part of curriculum planning will enhance the potential for all teachers. This course will also be of great benefit to Heads of Department or Faculty, team leaders and strand managers. It is designed to be appropriate to all sectors of education as it is the principles of pedagogy that we focus on that are essentially the same across all phases of learning.
