An in a nutshell course - Learning how to teach comprehension - some strategies to support subject teachers to teach reading for meaning

Reading for meaning is an essential skill whatever the subject. The written word, symbols, graphs, maps, charts, diagrams all require the skill or reading and interpreting.  For many teachers, especially those in the secondary phase, the last time they had an English lesson, let alone a lesson in comprehension was when they were still at school. English teachers, of course, do know how to teach comprehension. The rest have probably never given it a thought.  There is such a need for all teachers to understand when learners in their classroom don't understand. When anyone stumbles across a word or an acronym that they don't understand they stop learning and focus on the one bit they can't grasp. Realising the importance of ensuring all teachers can help learners towards understanding the words or other medium that is placed in front of them is essential especially where learners are working away from the classroom and do not have the support of their peers or the teacher.  This one-hour nutshell course provides some tools and techniques to support the non-specialist help their learners to read and understand. This has such potential to make a difference to the learning and to successful outcomes for the learner.

This nutshell course will include:-

  • A focus on the skill of reading from phonics to positive verbal reasoning and everywhere in between
  • Some tools and techniques for supporting learners read fluently and with understanding
  • Identifying some of the intervention strategies that will support the teacher to help the learner towards greater understanding
  • A focus on grammar and vocabulary as an important part of any subject and identifying how to decode subject specific language for the learner

The webinar will include video presentations, proformas for discussion and planning, card templates for an activity that can be used with staff again and again, some research documents that can be downloaded for future reading to inform change or strengthen the decision-making process and presentation slides with a voice over and transcript.

This is part of a growing suite of nutshell courses we are planning. CPD is an essential part of school life and these webinars provide a flexible alternative to face to face training which can be difficult to timetable.  We are running a suite of live webinars as 2½ hour morning or twilight sessions where the trainer is live using an online platform.  These are proving very popular but for some the flexibility of these nutshells may be more accessible.

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed specifically for subject specialists in a secondary school or teachers in the primary phase who teach across a range of subjects. Subject leaders may want to dip into this short course as a starting point for training all staff in their team or department.  It will also be useful for those who have responsibility for CPD in school and who can use the content to deliver the training more widely.
