This event will run:-

as morning sessions from 10.00 until 12.30 over two weeks

or as twilight sessions from 16.00 to 18.30 over two weeks

How will this course benefit you?

Literacy is fundamental to learning not just in English but in every subject across the curriculum. This course helps those who are responsible for literacy across the curriculum with the right strategies that will ensure all pupils use oracy with confidence and flair, read with profound understanding and a thirst for more and write in a way that shows their acquisition of knowledge, their grasp of key concepts and their ability to demonstrate that they are progressing as a result of high quality and sequential content and pedagogy.

What will be covered in the course?

  • A specific look at speaking and listening, individual group and peer working and how learning can be enhanced through collaborative working practices
  • Strategies for developing high quality reading skills where pupils can read and understand and use the knowledge or content of their reading as part of discussion or sharing of ideas across all curriculum subjects
  • How to encourage highly effective writing skills where excellent grammar and spelling is integral and does not stifle creativity
  • Assessment strategies linked to current thinking and practice that will support assessment for learning as well as summative assessment at key points in the learning
  • How to build opportunities to share practice across different lessons, year groups and in subject teaching using some coaching strategies

Who should attend?

For senior Leaders - A very intensive focus for senior leaders who have overall control of curriculum planning and want to be aware of the latest research and 'deep dive' strategies that can help to ensure that all pupils have the literacy skills to access knowledge, deepen their conceptual understanding, sequence the learning and become unconsciously competent in their use of the literacy skills they need for learning.

For Literacy Leaders - This course is invaluable for those with responsibility for literacy across the curriculum. We look in detail at the core components of the English curriculum and how through careful long-and medium-term planning pupils develop literacy skills that will enhance their learning in all subjects and across the curriculum.

For teachers - For all teachers in the primary phase this course challenges them to look in detail at the aims and statutory guidance that make up a sequential and knowledge rich English curriculum. We look at how through positive interaction and professional learning conversations the use of oracy, depth of understanding in reading and targeted approaches to powerful writing techniques pupils can use their literacy skills to demonstrate their growing depth of knowledge.
