Make the observing of lessons an opportunity for professional dialogue and positive feedback that creates for all staff a consistent and highly empowering approach to continuing professional learning linked to curriculum design and delivery over time.

Lesson observation is an essential part of assessing how well the curriculum intent is translated into classroom pedagogy that ensures seamless learning. Observers must establish that planning and delivery builds on prior knowledge, allows learners to move with confidence towards clearly defined end points and creates powerful opportunities for learners to progress and be challenged as an integral part of each lesson.

This event will include:-

  • A focus on how to use lesson observation as part of professional learning and to ensure all teaching and support staff are prepared for subject specific 'deep dives'
  • Reflecting on the purpose of lesson observation and how to create a culture where the observation process is seen as a learning opportunity for the observer and the observed
  • An in - depth look at the questions an observer needs to focus on in preparation for a lesson observation to include where the curriculum content and how it is delivered is a priority
  • Learning how to use coaching techniques to create highly effective approaches to observation feedback that leads to the individual teacher taking an active role in how they can continuously improve their practice, where they focus on their strengths and define for themselves areas for improvement or change
  • An opportunity to focus on a deep review of the lesson, the pedagogy, pupil outcomes, the sequencing of curriculum content linked to curriculum intent and how pupils are challenged or supported throughout
  • A focus on how to take the learning back to school to ensure coaching skills will further develop effective feedback strategies and foster the sharing and cascading of good and outstanding practice to ensure that lesson observation has a positive impact on individual, team and school improvement

Who should attend?

Line managers, subject and faculty leaders and all those involved in the process of lesson observation that is either formal or informal. There are profound opportunities here for those involved in developing whole school CPD strategies to use the learning developed through this event to add in coaching as an integral part of the observation process and work towards creating a coaching culture that will ensure outstanding practice is shared and disseminated so that all teaching and support staff can learn and grow from the process.

The latest OFSTED Handbook says that observation will be an integral part of the process of inspection. However, their focus is on how the curriculum is delivered to ensure connections are made across all learning and that there is no mismatch with what has been planned and what is delivered.  With this in mind lesson observation needs to have a clear rationale.  In June of 2019 OFSTED published their research into lesson observation to use as part of their own validation. They focus on teaching and are not necessarily what will be used at an inspection. They do, however, provide some useful guidance on what to look for in a good or outstanding lesson. We have added to them a set of indicators of what observers and teachers might be looking for in terms of learning outcomes from the pupils.  Essentially a far less subjective set of indicators that are linked directly to what pupils produce, learn and retain.

All our events are centrally located. Registration and refreshments are available from 9.30am for a 10.00am start, and we will finish around 3.30-4.00pm. We always provide lunch.
