Coaching and the Pastoral Role - Two live webinar sessions to focus on how to use coaching to build confidence, foster well-being and improve behaviour

This event will run:-

as morning sessions from 10.00 until 12.30 over two weeks

or as twilight sessions from 16.00 to 18.30 over two weeks

The intervening week can be used for reflection, collaboration and an opportunity to practice coaching. Coaching can make a significant difference when supporting both staff and learners who have found the past few months difficult to cope with. See our 15 top tips for ensuring learners can make the transition from home schools to the classroom.

Coaching is about allowing individuals to solve their own problems, find solutions and build on their strengths and successes. This online course is for those responsible for pastoral care in schools and colleges. Learning how to coach will enhance the skills of pastoral leaders and year heads and help them to foster resilience, reflection and resoursefulness that ensure pupils learn how to be more independent and self-reliant. This virtual training course is particularly pertinent at the moment as pupils are faced with a loss of time in school and a return that may be problematic.  Where those responsible for their well-being and mental health learn how to coach they are ready to provide the support and cultivate confidence and self-belief.

Delivering a pastoral system in a school requires a range of skills that will nurture learners and allow them to grow and progress well throughout their school life. Where those involved in the pastoral process develop the skills and attributes of a coach they are far more likely to be able to support the smooth transition from key stage to key stage, provide support for learners within a year group who are not progressing as they should or understand how certain behaviours arise and can be dealt with. Developing a range of coaching skills will also help the pastoral team when they interact with parents and carers.

Creating opportunities to develop a coaching culture will provide the pastoral team with a strategy that allows for a highly cohesive team approach to the pastoral process fostering excellent communication within the pastoral team, with curriculum teams and with partner schools, parents and the wider community.

The day will include:-

  • Identifying the qualities of an effective pastoral team - skills and attributes required to ensure success with learners and with the team
  • Defining current practice - what works well and what could be improved
  • Examining why coaching is a powerful model to use to ensure the pastoral process supports learner progression, motivation and success at school
  • Identifying and practising coaching skills in relation to an issue or situation that commonly arises in a pastoral setting
  • Developing a strategy for how to implement a coaching culture into the pastoral process
  • Further opportunities to practise coaching skills, specifically the sharing of ideas as to the embedding of coaching as part of managing the pastoral process

Who should attend?

Year heads, pastoral leaders and those with responsibility for transition from key stage to key stage. This is also a good opportunity for partnerships of schools, for instance, where a group of primary or middle partners work closely with one secondary or high school to support transition or similarly from early years and infant schools in to primary.

This event would also support House leaders or vertical tutors where communication across teams is vital in ensuring the well being of learners and where older students may well benefit from coaching so that they can support younger learners.

We can also deliver this course in schools or colleges for groups of staff. Contact us to find out more.

This course is one of a series of live webinars that are running as either morning sessions from 10.00 to 12.30 or as twilight sessions from 16.00 to 18.30. If you want to find out about how we can run these to be streamed into schools or colleges for larger groups send us a request via our Contact us page and we will be in touch

We currently have six programmes that sit on a MOODLE platform where a school or college can buy the course to use with their teams or with the whole staff in line with their own CPD timetable. More of these are scheduled to be designed and built this term.

We can also offer to design and run bespoke CPD courses and packages for whole or college delivery or for smaller groups and teams.  We have several online platforms that create a highly interactive and powerful learning opportunity for your staff.
