Coaching is the most powerful way to ensure all staff in school have the skills to influence change, reflect on learning and deliver outstanding pedagogy. Coaching builds confidence, creates a culture that is non-judgemental, highly motivating and will transform practice. Learning how to coach supports leaders in their quest for excellence, managers in their desire to create cohesive teams and teachers who want to create a culture of learning and challenge in their classrooms.

This course is designed as an introduction to the skills of coaching.  It is recommended that those who are new to coaching should start here and then choose other coaching courses linked to their role to learn more and begin to learn and practice the skills of a coach so that they can influence change and enhance the professional learning of themselves and their team. The course is designed to ensure that each individual can cascade their learning to others and use the resources and materials to reinforce and deepen their learning.

The sessions will focus on:

  • Defining coaching and its principles and how it can support the development of a learning culture in your organisation
  • Explaining the differences between coaching and mentoring and the value of both as tools for learning
  • Exploring the skills and qualities needed for developing effective coaching approaches in your practice
  • Introducing and practising a model of coaching and simple tools and techniques to structure and support coaching conversations
  • Deciding how to take coaching forward for you as an individual, for your team and for your organisation

There will be the opportunity to reflect and complete a log of your learning which will contribute to your personal CPD record and can be shared with the course facilitator. Following on from this course there is a series of coaching courses for those with specific roles. We can also offer a one-to-one coaching service.

We can also deliver this course in schools or colleges for groups of staff. Contact us to find out more.

Who is it for?

This course is the beginning of a journey to becoming a coach. For senior leaders it is a significant step in learning how coaching can have a dramatic impact on school improvement, continuing professional development and enhancing teaching and learning. For middle, subject, team or departmental managers coaching provides a vehicle for supporting team cohesion, the sharing of good practice and ensuring cohesion in how the school or college vision is achieved. For teachers, there is no doubt that coaching is a powerful pedagogy that creates opportunities for learners to find their own solutions, become more independent and accept challenge. It also provides for all staff across a school a profound opportunity to work together through the use of professional and motivational dialogue.
