Re-thinking Appraisal - Influencing learning, empowering people and creating a culture of positive change

appraisal goalsOFSTED have taken out of their Handbook for Schools the phrase Performance management and replaced it with Professional Development. The inference, is surely that professional development is the key to ensuring staff within a school or college have the skills, knowledge and self-belief to continue to grow and be successful in their role.  This event provides leaders and managers with an opportunity to review the effectiveness of their procedures for ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is continually improving and staff have the right systems so that they can learn from their colleagues and be a part of a culture of self improvement, reflection and the sharing and cascading of good practice. We also look closely at the kind of strategies that are successful in tackling under performance and building confidence of those who are perceived or perceive themselves to be not performing well.

This event will build in a review of the whole process of performance management from the statutory requirements, to an in-depth review of the appraisal process and what constitutes good practice in the development of an inclusive appraoch where individuals are involved in their own professional development and self-assessment.

Appraisal is at the heart of the current aproach to performance management. Getting it right is an essential part of delivering the school development plan. This event will provide an opportuntiy to look at how to use coaching as part of the lead up to the appraisal interview, the use of deep and rich questioning during the interview and the kinds of skills that will support line managers as they mentor and coach their teams towards achieving their objectives and being an integral part of helping to deliver the school's quest for improvement.

The very latest OFSTED Handbook for 2018 states that:-

  • Incisive evaluation of the impact of staff's practice leads to highly focused professional development and improves the quality of teaching
  • Leaders and governors use high quality professional development to encourage, challenge and support teachers' improvement. Teaching is highly effective across the school
  • Staff reflect on and debate the way they teach.  They feel deeply involved in their own professional development. Leaders have created a climate in which teachers are motivated and trusted to take risks and innovate in ways that are right for their pupils
  • Teachers value the continuing professional development provided by the school. It is having a positive impact on their teaching and on pupils' learning

Ofsted will usually expect to see evidence that there are opportunities to reflect on teaching and learning and its link to teachers’ professional development and the teachers’ standards, but this should be the information that the school uses routinely and not additional evidence generated for inspection.

ESTYN in Wales says,

The provider needs to demonstrate to the inspectors that its performance management systems are rigorous and are contributing effectively towards identifying training and development needs.

This one day course will provide:-

  • An opportunity to reflect on the purpose of performance management and its links to professional learning and development. How does the process enhance motivation, contribute to staff well-being and create opportunities for positive improvement linked to the school vision
  • A focus on best practice from outstanding school settings with examples of highly effective performance management strategies linked to current legislation, pay, performance, professional development and what OFSTED, ISI or ESTYN want to see
  • Time to reflect on how performance management and professional development are used positively to focus on the strengths of individual staff and how line managers can develop the coaching skills that will support positive change, build self-esteem and ensure a culture of on-going excellence and improvement
  • Identify what excellence in teaching looks like and how best to create the right culture where outstanding teachers identify their learning agenda, good teachers know what they need to do to continue to grow in their role and those who need help are expertly supported, mentored and coached to grow in confidence and begin to understand themselves what they need to do to improve
  • An opportunity to look closely at the appraisal process from pre-interview to follow up meetings and how a coaching model supports staff well-being, resilience and a continuous process of learning and improvement
  • Work with delegates to develop a range of coaching techniques including questioning, listening and influencing to create the right skills to conduct an appraisal interview and follow up feedback sessions that will support reflection, self - evaluation and a deeper understanding for both the appraiser and the appraisee of how they can work together to support staff well-being, individual, team and school improvement and the management of change
