The art of effective performance management is in how well a manager can empower his or her staff towards continually improving in pursuit of the achievement of clearly identified objectives and goals.  Many schools have now completed the first stage of their performance management cycle for this year and for some this process has changed to take account of new legislation and policy. Sustaining high quality performance management systems is the key to consistent school improvement and this training opportunity provides new and exisitng line managers and with a deep understanding of how to develop a culture that harnesses and nurtures success.

Our one day training event is designed to offer managers and teachers who appraise and line manage staff to develop a range of coaching and mentoring skills that will support them in how to build confidence, lead teachers and other staff to find their own solutions and have a range of techniques that deliver positive and motivational feedback.  We look at how to ask the right questions, the importance of focused and global listening and how to influence and steer others towards successful outcomes.

The day will include:

• A review of best practice models that define how the new performance management standards are being used to improve school and individual effectiveness
• A look at the cycle of performance management particularly its relationship to the school's vision and strategic plan and how this dovetails into a whole school focus for relevant continuing professional development opportunities that are linked to individual, departmental and organisational objectives
• Reflecting on the appraisal process in relation to the setting of SMART objectives, refining interview technique and reviewing the skills that lead to effective and motivational feedback
• A focus on observation as a tool for learning and review ensuring that feedback, support and advice lead to a culture of reflection, motivational dialogue and self-esteem
• Defining what next, developing performance management strategies that have clearly defined objectives linked to professional development, a measurable impact on the quality of teaching and clearly defined learner and staff outcomes
