Transition from Key Stage 3 to 4 - developing deep learning

Focusing on Deep and Autonomous Learning for Higher Achievement - Transition from Key Stage 3 to 4

  • Exploring a project based curriculum to prepare learners at the end of their Key Stage 3 experience and help them develop skills that will enhance their capacity for learning
  • An opportunity to explore the Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills and how planning a project based curriculum will help embed these skills for learners
  • Help learners to develop the Functional Skills they will need to achieve GCSE through the context of a theme or topic that inspires and links to GCSE targets
  • Develop a cross curricular plan that allows for a collaborative approach to learning and a platform for innovation that stretches and challenges learners in preparation for developing the skills that will help them to achieve the highest grades

Year 9 Post Options - A Project Focused Solution

Option time for Year 9 learners is inevitably an exciting time. They will be looking forward to starting their GCSE studies and will be saying goodbye to those subjects that have not inspired them during Key Stage 3. Post option time can be difficult for some teachers especially when learners have not opted for their particular subject but even where learners are still switched on to the subject they can be less than enthusiastic. Developing a more skills focused and thematic approach to delivering the curriculum for this group during this period has proven to have a positive impact on behaviour and performance in the last term of Key Stage 3 and on their subsequent performance as they work towards taking their GCSEs.

Our one day training event will provide an opportunity for those responsible for planning, delivering and/or teaching the curriculum in year 9.

The day will include:

  • An opportunity to focus on how learners can develop problem solving skills, focus on research, become effective team players and be creative thinkers
  • A focus on helping learners set challenging and far reaching targets and develop skills in order that they become resilient, analytical and reflective learners
  • Looking at the Functional Skills specifications so that learners can begin to develop these in the context of a project, theme or topic
  • An exploration of ideas and best practice models from other schools
  • Time to plan a strategy for developing a similar programme

This event can form part of our SCOPE programme or as a stand alone training opportunity for those who plan the curriculum for or deliver to Year 8 or 9 learners at the end of Key Stage 3 within your organisation. The coaching techniques that underpin all our training provide a unique opportunity for all those who attend to cascade their experience to others within their team department or across the whole organisation leading to a collaborative and cross curricular opportunity for both the teacher and the learner.
