Crossing the Bridge - Transition from Key Stage 2 to 3

We continue our series of regional events for all those who are involved in the transition process from Key Stage 2 to 3. Creating effective partnerships and building strong bridges between secondary schools and their transition partners is the key to ensuring that all learners continue to learn and achieve their full potential as they make the change from primary to secondary school.

We know from in-depth research that there is an average dip in the performance by 39% of learners by the end of year 7. We will share with delegates information and innovative and highly successful strategies and provide the tools for planning so that there is a seamless transition.

We have worked with many schools across both England and Wales supporting them in creating the right environment for learners at the start of their secondary school experience. Getting it right impacts on raising achievement and attainment across the whole school and creates a foundation for outstanding learning and teaching.

We draw on some of the models that have been used to create an alternative approach to the curriculum in year 7 including the RSA Opening Minds competence based curriculum and we will explain how it is driving excellence in teaching and learning across those schools who are using it.

Workshops – We will give delegates the time and support to focus on what works well for them now and how they can improve the process to ensure all learners achieve their full potential at this crucial time. Our themes will include:-

  • Creating the right environment for transition partners to work together to ensure a seamless transition
  • How to interpret and make the best use of data
  • Talking pedagogy and teaching and learning - Making comparisons across the bridge
  • Planning a competence based curriculum
  • Collaborative projects that link year 6 and year 7
  • Understanding the pastoral role

There will be opportunities for discussion and delegates will go back to school with a clear plan as to how to embed excellence and improvement across this phase. All our training and development has an element of coaching built into it so that delegates can share their knowledge and skills will others on their return to school.
