Coaching for Teaching Assistants and Support Staff

The supporting role in the classroom is one that is valuable and important in ensuring that the teacher can focus on the individual needs of learners and concentrate on making sure that all learners achieve their full potential. The relationship between the teacher and his or her support team is critical in creating a seamless learning process that benefits the learner. Coaching is all about building confidence, developing the individual and reflecting on excellent practice and improvement. Where support staff develop coaching skills they can work more closely with the teacher and other educational professionals to create a culture of reflection, professional dialogue and help to foster excellence in learning and achievement.

The one day event will focus on:

  • The role of the Teaching or Support Assistant - reviewing their impact on learning
  • Examining the role and nature of support in the classroom
  • Building a team - working with peers, other teachers and managers
  • Learning, teaching and pedagogy - working together for the learner
  • Developing coaching strategies for peer to peer support
  • Using the GROW coaching model to develop a strategy for developing reflective practice and professional dialogue
  • Reflection and communication – collaborating and consolidating outstanding classroom practice and support
