Active Learning Strategies to Increase Engagement, Participation and Progress
Case Study

Southall School in Telford caters for a range of learners with moderate and complex needs, many of whom come from families and communities that experience cycles of deprivation and low expectations.

The curriculum is designed to ensure that students have opportunities to apply their knowledge and use skills in practical ways that will enhance their enjoyment and support vital life and work skills to ensure their successful transition and economic prosperity.

The school was given a grade of Satisfactory but rapidly improving following their last OFSTED inspection. The advice given was to Increase the proportion of good and outstanding teaching and learning by helping teachers to be more precise about what they want pupils to learn, as well as do, and analyse the balance of social development and academic progress in all lessons. It was also recommended that they use information about pupils' skills and knowledge more effectively during lessons to adjust the activities and levels of active learning and involve pupils in reflecting on their own learning more regularly within lessons.

The senior management team at Southall have used our coaching programme to provide a group of four outstanding teachers with a range of coaching skills so that they can support other teachers within the school to deliver the aims outlined in the School Improvement plan to increase engagement, participation and progress in lessons through practical and active learning at the appropriate level. An emphasis has been placed on how teachers can develop learning conversations and use motivational dialogue to inspire learners to think about their learning and how they learn and then concentrate on ensuring that the learning is active and is focused on ensuring learners progress both socially and academically in order that they all reach their full potential.
